How it happens
Why doors come off the track
-
The car tapped the door
The most common cause. Even a slow bump bends the lower track or pops the rollers out.
-
A roller wore through or broke
Nylon rollers crack, steel rollers seize. Either way the door jumps the rail.
-
A cable snapped
One side drops, the door racks in the opening, and the rollers on the high side come out.
-
Ice or a frozen seal
The door froze to the slab, the opener pulled, and the bottom section twisted out of the track.
-
Loose or bent track
Track brackets work loose over the years. The gap grows until a roller finds it.
What we do
Reset, replace, realign
We take the load off the door, set the rollers back in the track, and replace any roller that is worn or cracked. Bent track gets straightened if it is minor and replaced if it is not. Then the track is realigned, the door balanced, and the opener limits reset so it does not happen again next week.
If the impact bent a panel, we tell you whether a single section can be replaced or whether the door is done.
Questions we get on the phone
Off-track door questions
-
Is an off-track door dangerous?
Yes. It can fall or drop suddenly when the remaining rollers let go. Keep everyone away from it until it is reset.
-
Can I force it back on?
No. Forcing it bends more track and can drop the door. Call.
-
How much does it cost?
We confirm the price at the door before any work starts, and you can say no.
-
Does hitting the door mean I need a new one?
Usually not. Most bumps are a track and roller job. If a panel is creased we will tell you what a section replacement looks like versus a new door.
